About this episode

Guest
Dr. Jeffrey Roh is an orthopedic spine surgeon and Chief Medical Officer at Excel Health
Recorded
At ASCA/SAMBA, with Alexis Anderson and Lindsay Alexander
Focus
The shift from inpatient to outpatient spine care, and what it means for ASC leaders thinking about safety, case complexity, reimbursement, robotics, and AI

The story

Dr. Jeffrey Roh has built his career at the leading edge of where surgery is heading. An orthopedic spine surgeon who trained in the Midwest, he now serves as Chief Medical Officer at Excel Health, where he is growing a surgery center business across Honolulu and Southern California.

Over the last few years he has observed a transformational shift in elective spine care procedures as they move into ambulatory surgery center settings, driven first and foremost, in his opinion, by patient preference.

His take? The move to outpatient is not only economical, it is safe. For well informed patients, the choice between a large open procedure with a multi-day hospital stay and a same day procedure through an incision the size of a pencil eraser is not much of a choice at all.

"Once you go outpatient, you never go back."

What he covers

Why he sees care in the outpatient setting as safe

and, in his view, sometimes safer than the hospital

Where he draws the line today on case complexity in spine

and how that line keeps moving

Where he lands on robotics

and the barrier he sees to wider adoption

Why he is all in on AI

how his teams use it today, and where he thinks it goes next

His advice for peers

Take the time and learn it. For surgeons who are hesitant about the ASC setting, his message is direct. Do a course, visit surgeons who understand where the market is headed, and learn the setting. Not for yourself, but for your patients.
